St Mary's Chapel
When you enter St Michael's, you quickly notice the first side chapel, today's Marienkapelle. Originally, it was actually dedicated to St Ursula. However, the entire altar structure was destroyed during the war and never rebuilt. The altarpiece of St Ursula painted by Peter Candid (1588) was inserted into the altar of the side chapel opposite, which had survived the destruction. Today, a copy of the ‘Mater dolorosa’ from the Herzogspitalkirche (in a version from 1855) stands on the altar in the Marienkapelle. Many people come to this ‘Mother of Sorrows’ every day - for quiet contemplation and prayer. Many light a candle.
In 2024, we were able to redesign our Marienkapelle chapel with the support of Und Mang Architektur and consecrate it on the 80th anniversary of the destruction of St Michael's (22 November 1944): The previously hidden brook stone base of the altar with traces of the damage from 22 November 1944 was uncovered to make the ‘wound’ of the destruction of St. Michael's visible. A new steel pedestal was made for the Madonna as well as a circular wreath of light, the symbol of resurrection and Easter life. New candlesticks and two benches run along the walls. The redesign of this special place reinforces the invitation to seek refuge and comfort in prayer or in silence that emanates from the ‘Mother of Sorrows’.
We are dependent on your support for the redesign of our St Mary's Chapel. We will be happy to issue you with a donation receipt. Please let us know your address as well as the purpose of your transfer.
